4.9.6. The dead.letter file

Important points:

  • The file is created automatically when a message that could not be sent appears.
  • If the file already exists, information about the message will be added to the end of the file.
  • The file stores all headers and contents of the message.
  • Deleting the file does not affect the operation of the hosting account and the sites hosted on it.

Emails that were sent from the web server without authorization (for example, using the PHP mail function) but were not forwarded to the mail server for delivery are automatically saved in the dead.letter file in the root directory of the hosting account.

The file contains only those emails whose sending was interrupted at the initial stage within the server (for example, due to an invalid sender address). If, however, the email was delivered to the mail server but not sent (for example, due to an incorrect recipient address), information about it should be found in the unsent mail log.
